The AIVD, CWI, and TNO have published an updated handbook on quantum-safe cryptography to prepare organizations for ‘Q-Day’—the moment when quantum computers can break current cryptographic methods. This second edition provides updated guidance and practical steps for transitioning to a quantum-safe environment, including identifying cryptographic components, assessing risks, and implementing agile solutions.
Unveiled at the ‘Post-Quantum Cryptography’ Symposium in The Hague, the handbook emphasizes that sensitive data is already at risk. In the future, quantum computers could decode intercepted encrypted data. Transitioning to new cryptographic standards may take a decade, making early action essential.
The handbook outlines concrete steps for a migration strategy and introduces the PQChoiceAssistant tool, which helps select appropriate post-quantum cryptographic methods. The Netherlands, along with Germany and France, plays a leading role in Europe, coordinating a roadmap for quantum-safe digital infrastructure. The symposium highlighted the urgency of preparation with its key message: “Act now, not later.”
