Glowing evidence: gunshot residue lights up

Researchers from AMOLF and the University of Amsterdam based at Amsterdam Science Park, have developed a groundbreaking method to rapidly and accurately detect gunshot residue at a crime scene. The technique is currently being tested by the Forensic Investigation Unit of the Amsterdam police and was published on 9 March 2025 in Forensic Science International. By transforming lead particles into a light-emitting semiconductor, forensic experts can immediately determine whether and where a firearm was used. This innovation makes the detection of critical evidence faster, simpler and more reliable than ever before.

Lead that lights up: a breakthrough in forensic science

A team of chemists and physicists from AMOLF and the University of Amsterdam has created an innovative method to visualize gunshot residue. By converting lead particles into a perovskite semiconductor that emits bright green light under UV light, firearm use can be demonstrated with high sensitivity. The method even works after intense hand washing, a significant advantage over traditional lab analysis, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and requires expensive equipment. This marks a significant leap forward in forensic technology.

Applications: from courtrooms to environmental monitoring

This method offers immediate benefits for forensic professionals: faster on-site detection, quicker screening of suspects and witnesses, and stronger evidence for use in court. The research team is also exploring broader applications. The glowing lead detection technique could be used to track lead pollution in water and soil. This opens up opportunities in environmental safety and public health monitoring.
