€200 Million for Holomicrobiome Institute

The Dutch government is investing €200 million in the Holomicrobiome Institute, an interdisciplinary research center set to launch in 2025 at Amsterdam Science Park. Researchers will study microbiomes of humans, animals, plants, and the environment—key to health, food security, and sustainability. This initiative supports the Park’s mission to apply science for a better world and strengthens its global position as a knowledge hub.

The breakthrough: a holistic view on microbiomes

Microbiomes—the billions of microorganisms that live in and around all living systems—play a crucial role in health, agriculture, and ecosystem services. What makes the Holomicrobiome Institute unique is its integrated approach: studying human, animal, plant, and environmental microbiomes as interconnected systems. This holistic perspective is vital to tackling complex global challenges such as climate change, antibiotic resistance, and food security. The €200 million investment underscores the national importance of this field and positions the Netherlands as a world leader in microbiome research.

The impact of the institute reaches far beyond academia. Scientific insights into microbiomes can lead to new biotech applications such as personalized probiotics, sustainable crop protection, and bio-based cleaning solutions. This is highly relevant for companies in sectors such as health, agri-food, climate, and environment. The institute acts as an innovation hub where startups, scale-ups, and established businesses can collaborate on next-generation solutions at the crossroads of biology and technology.

Collaborate on microbiome innovations

For companies active in biotech, agri-food, medtech, or sustainability, the Holomicrobiome Institute offers unique opportunities. The institute invites partners to co-develop cutting-edge applications. From shared labs to joint research projects, Amsterdam Science Park provides the infrastructure and network needed for successful collaboration.
