The Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI) is the Dutch national network of AI knowledge. Aimed at fostering AI innovation between the academic and business communities, alongside the Dutch government, its research labs include Bosch’s Delta Lab, Elsevier’s Discovery Lab andThe National Police Lab AI , among others.

Another example is the national research institute for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), and the Startup Village, which specialises in AI and data science. Bright minds from all over the world join here to break the mould and make new discoveries in digital technologies.

The benefits of AI and data

Aside from transforming industries and opening R&D opportunities, there are various sustainability initiatives that AI and data science make possible. By combining technology, maths, science, and other research, experts can model the effects of greenhouse gas emissions, for example, and work on solutions to reduce them. On-site in Amsterdam Science Park’s new Matrix One building, the SustainaLab is where companies, researchers and collaborators strive to achieve greener operations. Among these are companies specialising in everything from machine learning and computer vision technology to artificial technologies that can be used in the medical and agricultural fields.

AI research meets business

The list of collaborative projects seeing research and business team up at the Science Park is far too long to include here, but the below selection provides an impression of the wide range of topics and ideas that is represented.

• ICAI’s AIRLab Amsterdam is studying how AI technology can be leveraged to improve customer service. In this lab the University of Amsterdam and Ahold Delhaize industry are working together on smart and socially responsible algorithms for retailers. To test their research and developments, they’re collaborating with companies such as Albert Heijn and Bol.com.
• In the Atlas Lab, a public-private research lab, TomTom and the University of Amsterdam work on using AI for developing advanced, accurate and safe HD maps for self-driving vehicles.
• AI innovations at Amsterdam Science Park are also enhancing healthcare as we know it. CWI spin-off Stokhos Emergency Mathematics is developing complex algorithms that are helping to improve the availability of ambulances in any given region. Their work is facilitating faster ambulance arrival times and, resultantly, a reduction in mortality rates. Other researchers from CWI have investigated how robots can be used to emotionally support children with cancer as they undergo treatment. The AI for Oncology lab is a collaboration between the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) and the University of Amsterdam. And the AIM Lab shows us how AI imaging can be used to improve patient diagnosis.
• Wireless technology pioneers Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI) are a multinational company applying artificial intelligence machine learning techniques to all types of commercial and societal challenges.
• Because future solutions rely on AI talent, you’ll find prominent names in the business world joining with students, academics and researchers. A prime example of this comes from the engineering and technology company, Bosch. Together with the University of Amsterdam, Bosch’s DELTA lab conducts world-class research into deep learning technologies through its knowledge-sharing exchange programme.
