Official launch of the MMD Technology hub: pioneering new molecules and materials

On November 21, 2024, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) officially launched the Molecular and Materials Design (MMD) Technology Hub. Held at the Matrix ONE building and organized by Scientific Director Alfons Hoekstra, the event brought together researchers from various institutes to discuss the urgent need for new molecules and materials and explore how technology can accelerate the discovery process.

  • In a video message, Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Peter van Tienderen highlighted the significance of the MMD Hub in tackling contemporary challenges requiring specific material properties. He emphasized the unique position of the Faculty of Science to develop technologies that accelerate scientific discovery cycles, aiming to design molecules and materials that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and the EU Green Deal.
  • An inspiring keynote address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Gert-Jan Gruter, known for developing the biobased polymer PEF for sustainable plastics. He underscored the MMD Hub’s potential in designing new materials for applications like refillable packaging.
  • The event also marked the inauguration of ‘Hipster’ (HIgh Performance Scientific Tier Education & Research), a computational cluster providing researchers with advanced infrastructure and expertise for data analysis.

The MMD Technology Hub aims to establish a vibrant community of scientists and partners conducting cutting-edge technological research in molecules and materials, with applications in health and sustainability.
