UvA researchers contribute to Dutch green hydrogen project

Researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) at Amsterdam Science Park are participating in the largest Dutch research project focused on green hydrogen production, called the “GIGA-Green” project. The project, coordinated by the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology (ISPT), involves more than 40 partners from industry, academia, and government. It aims to develop large-scale and cost-effective solutions for producing green hydrogen through electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources. This technology is crucial for achieving the Netherlands’ climate goals, particularly in reducing CO2 emissions in heavy industries.

With a budget of €125 million and a 7-year timeline, the GIGA-Green project seeks to optimize hydrogen production by improving the efficiency, scalability, and cost of electrolysis technologies. UvA researchers, specifically from the Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences, will contribute their expertise in catalysis, materials science, and process development.

Green hydrogen is a key component in decarbonizing sectors like steel production, chemical manufacturing, and energy storage, making the outcomes of this project vital for the Netherlands’ transition to a sustainable economy.
