Toyota backs quantum future with QuSoft

Toyota and QuSoft are joining forces in Amsterdam. Their goal? To conduct joint research into quantum computing for AI applications. The partnership began in March 2025 and marks a new phase in industry-funded fundamental research with international relevance.

Breakthrough in quantum algorithms

The collaboration between Toyota and Amsterdam Science Park-based research center QuSoft focuses on foundational research into quantum algorithms, with a strong emphasis on their use in artificial intelligence and complex optimization challenges. Where classical computers hit limits in scale and processing time, quantum computing offers a paradigm shift in computational power and efficiency.

QuSoft—established by CWI, the University of Amsterdam, and the Dutch Research Council (NWO)—is internationally recognized for its expertise in quantum software. The partnership with Toyota underlines the strategic importance of this field for the automotive sector and other high-tech industries.

What makes this collaboration unique is Toyota’s deliberate choice to support open-ended, fundamental research, without demanding immediate applications or strict development timelines. This approach gives researchers the freedom to pursue truly pioneering work, while also laying a solid scientific foundation for future industrial innovations.

This model—where a major industrial player invests in long-term knowledge development—is rare in Europe. It reflects a growing recognition of quantum technology as a key enabler for the next generation of industrial innovation.
